Troubleshooting Problems

When I try to install the Educated Investor Guide or Toolkit I get a "Feature Transer Error" indicating that access is denied.

In many cases, this occurs because you are not logged into your computer as an administrator. Log out of Windows and then log back in with an administrator account and try the installation again.

If this does not solve the problem, please contact us for a replacement CD by calling toll-free 888-345-1285.

I am running on Mac OS X. I installed all three applications. The installation seem to work fine, but no matter which application I try to run, it always shows the same application!

This problem can be a bit confusing but is easily resolved. Basically, you ended up installing all three applications in the same folder. When you open the folder to run the applications, you see the expected names of the three applications. However, it turns out that each application uses the same names for all of its data files. When you installed the second and third application in the same folder, you ended up overriding the files so that you ended up with all of the data files for the last application you installed. Fortunately, the fix is easy. First, drag the folder that contains all of the applications to the trash to delete them. Then reinstall the applications, but this time do not specify the destination folder. Depending on which version of OS X you are running, you may need to select the hard drive as the destination, but don't select the specific destination folder. When you install the applications in this manner, you will end up with three separate folders within the main Applications folder. These folders will be named Guide to Investing, Encyclopedia of Everyday Law, and Work Less Live More. This will allow you to run all three of the applications without them interfering with one another.

I am trying to install the Encyclopedia of Personal Finance. It is asking for a serial number but I can't locate it.

On the Standard and Deluxe editions of the Encyclopedia of Personal Finance, the serial number sticker is on the back of the case in the lower right corner. On the NBR Edition of the Encyclopedia the serial number is inside the case just above the CD.

I am trying to install the Encyclopedia of Personal Finance. I am on the Customer Information screen which contains the serial number. I have located and entered the serial number but the Next button is staying grayed out.

The serial number starts with "D", "S" or "N" and is followed by 16 digits or characters. The 12 characters after the "D", "S" or "N" are always numbers. The last 4 characters can be numbers or letters. You may be mis-counting the number of zeros. Make sure you have correctly entered the serial number.

Why do I keep getting "Document Not Found: ...." errors?

This error can occur if your computer has its temporary file location set improperly. In particular, the TMP variable can not be set to the root directory ("C:\" for example). To see if this is the case, open a command prompt: Click Start -> Programs -> MS-DOS Prompt. Then enter "set" and click Enter. Look for a line that starts with "TMP=...". If this line says "TMP=C:\" then this is causing the error. Follow these instructions (for Windows 95/98/ME only) to fix it:

  1. Open Notepad: Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Notepad.
  2. Click File ->> Open...
  3. In the "File name" box, type "c:\autoexec.bat" and hit Enter.
  4. Look for lines that says "SET TMP=C:\" or "SET TEMP=C:\".
  5. Delete both of these lines if they exist.
  6. Click File ->> Save.
  7. Exit Notepad and reboot your computer.

When I start The Encyclopedia of Personal Finance, I get a '76: Path Not Found' error.

This can happen when you install the EPF to the root folder of a drive. For example, "D:". If you wish to install the program to a location other that the default (C:\Program Files\Precision Information\The Encyclopedia of Personal Finance), please specify a folder - e.g. D:\EPF.
